Crown - High Street

Located in a Georgian property now directly opposite Kegworth Junior School, this pub was known as the Three Tuns in 1851 but by 1880, when John Dakin was landlord, it had been renamed the Crown. It closed about 1911, Daniel Brown being one of the last licensees. Subsequently in 1920, the building became Lottie Stockton's General Store, a shop that is remembered with affection by two generations of Kegworth school children.

It is probable that Wells Brewery owned the house and that it passed to Worthington Brewery as part of the 1924 purchase ofWells. The sons of Sidney Wells junior appear to have purchased the property at an auction held at the Flying Horse on 10 June 1925, for they sold it to Lottie by a conveyance dated 27 June 1929 for ?100. This sum included the adjoining house that at some time had been used as a malt office by James Sturgess, a maltster and the licensee of the Oddfellows Arms. When Lottie retired, the shop reverted to its original use, a private dwelling. It is known as Stockton House and owned by Lottie's descendants.
